If you watch Grey’s Anatomy regularly (like me) then you probably know the character Dr. Arizona Robbins, played by the wonderful Jessica Capshaw. Since her first appearance on the show in 2009, in the episode ‘Wish You Were Here’, Jessica gained more and more fans in quick succession. Which is only normal in my opinion, her acting is incredible, she seems like a down-to-earth person and she is super friendly towards her fans. Each season her performance gets better and better and her fandom keeps growing. Anyway, this blog isn’t about her role as Arizona in Grey’s Anatomy. This blog is about Jessica and what she does besides acting.
Most of you know that Jessica is a mother of three wonderful kids; Luke, Eve and Poppy. Her husband, Christopher Gavigan, is the co-founder of ‘The Honest Company’, the author of ‘Healthy Child, Healthy World – Creating a Cleaner, Greener, Safer home’, he is an internationally recognized expert in the area of healthy, sustainable product development. Being a working mom she has a busy life. However, besides the appearances she makes as an actress, Jessica also takes time to attend various benefits and supports different organisations which are close to her heart. And perhaps what may be surprising to some is that she also has written some interesting articles. Maybe deep down she could be an amazing blogger, her parentblog in her husband’s book is a prime example (everyone should read if they haven’t already!)
Being a mom, Jessica has this unconditional love for her kids and family. Supporting organisations like The Honest Company, Baby2Baby, Healthy Child – Healthy World, Children’s Defense Fund, CEHC, MomsCAF does show this kind of love in a way. It makes the people notice and they become aware.
Jessica is a Baby2Baby angel. Baby2Baby is an organisation that supplies families in need with essential baby gear and clothing for their children up to the age of 12. By distributing new and gently used items to over 50 non-profit organisations so far, Baby2Baby reached over 50 000 children per year. Baby2Baby is well known in the US. They have lots of events yearly and Jessica is almost always present. She recently partnered with Bravado designs to donate nursing bras for the low-income mothers that Baby2Baby serves.
Being married to Christopher Gavigan, former CEO of Healthy Child Healthy World, does make Jessica more aware of possible dangers. Their mission is to empower parents to take action and protect their children from harmful chemicals.
Other events that Jessica regularly attends are: ‘The Children’s Defense Fund’ events, which is an organisation that advocates nationwide that children are always a priority. ‘PS ARTS’ events has the mission to improve the lives of children by providing arts education to underserved public schools and communities. “The Mount Sinai Children’s Environmental Health Center” (CEHC) often organises benefit luncheon, named ‘Greening Our Children’ to fund research initiatives and research at CEHC. Jessica, being an activist, moderated this event. The mission of CEHC is to address the big challenge and to protect our children from toxic chemicals in the air, water, food,… They are able to do this by tracking down the environmental causes of diseases, like autism, obesity, ADHD, Diabetes and Cancer.
One of my favorite organisations that Jessica recently joined, is the Moms Clean Air Force. Being part of the leadership circle Jessica uses her ‘voice’ to spread their message and make people listen. Moms Clean Air Force is an US based national movement of more than 150 000 moms (and dads). They are protecting our children’s right to clean air. Jessica about MomsCAF:
‘I believe that what is happening is immoral and unsafe. And as a mother, I won’t stand for things that endanger my child — ALL our children — a moment longer. That’s why I’ve joined a nonpartisan organization called Moms Clean Air Force. We are moms — and dads, too — from across the country fighting to get strong clean air regulations. Polluters have power and political influence. But we have hearts full of the strongest love that one can find…the love of a parent’
‘The effect of one good-hearted person is incalculable’
A good-hearted person is one of the things I would say about Jessica Capshaw. I love, respect and admire Jessica. Not only because of her outstanding acting and making her storylines ‘real’, but also because she is someone who uses her voice and is willing to make a change. She shares her passion, she shows her support on twitter for organisations, she makes us listen and think about certain things. And that’s what we need today. Someone who doesn’t just talk, but someone who is a ‘do-er’ and makes a change.
“I’m not afraid. If I fall on my face, I’ll just get up and wipe my knees off and go on” – Jessica Capshaw
