I love reading newspapers, especially the ‘science’ topics. Monday there was an interesting article about ‘when people beat nature’. It mainly focused on artificial islands or the ‘man-made’ islands. They introduced the article with the question: ‘drowning or construct an artificial island’. That is something I don’t really have to worry about ’cause I live far from the sea, but this is bitter reality for the people from the island Kiribati. Artificial islands is a solution for them, the sea level has been rising quite fast, so they need more space where people can live without having to worry about drowning…

So you can say that artificial islands are also used as a solution for the lack of space. But some people who can afford it, invest in artificial islands to be able to escape reality. For example, constructing your own ‘ruleless’ island, where you don’t have to pay taxes and you don’t have any restrictions. Or they are also used for tourism, making sure that every tourist has an amazing time. The most popular ‘tourist’ artificial islands are the ones from Dubai, also called the ‘Palm Islands’.

But, almost everything has a downside and so do the artificial islands. They invested a lot of money in the Palm islands, but now it has been proven that the islands are ‘sinking’… So in the end, nature always wins!
